Meet Recap: 2020 Showdown
I’m Just Happy to be Here
Well, better late than never I suppose! This year I got the opportunity to compete at The Showdown meet on 26 September hosted by Strong Barbell Club and the WRPF in Kansas City, MO, and it was an EXPERIENCE! This was the first big raw meet I’ve ever been a part of with an absolutely stacked roster. The meet directors and organizers had just about every logistic curve ball thrown at them with the pandemic but they managed to pull off an incredible event despite having to change venues from Buffalo, NY to KC last minute.
I’ve predominantly competed in USPA and APF meets so this was my first time with WRPF and I was very impressed. The standards were consistent and the judges, spotters, and loaders were top notch professionals. The biggest take away from this meet for me was the atmosphere. Being around so many elite lifters was a little overwhelming at first but once we got in the warm up room it was just like any other meet where we all just knew what needed to be done and executed. It was shocking how smooth everything moved; if the warm up area was getting too hot then JP Price was there and turned the fans on for us, if we needed more plates or change then someone was there ready to load and spot. This meet truly felt like it was for the lifter and it may have spoiled me forever, to be honest haha.
I was just happy to be there. I was really happy with my personal performance, I went 8/9 with 474/303/507 in sleeves with a nice little total PR over my wrapped numbers. and I didn’t place last. With a roster like that, I had to go into it with a mindset to just have fun and enjoy being at a meet that big and don’t bomb out.
